Web development vs full stack development, from 65 fresher job listings in India
What is the difference between web development and full stack development?
Full stack development covers both halves of a web app, the front end and the back end; web development can mean either or both. In 65 fresher listings on Naukri on 2 November 2026, 8 of 11 full stack titles named a frontend and a backend technology; so did 8 of 17 web developer titles, mostly with PHP.
What web developer, frontend, backend and full stack jobs for freshers ask for
Fresher listings in India for the four web roles name different things: full stack titles name both a frontend and a backend technology, frontend and backend titles almost never do, and web developer titles fall in between. On 2 November 2026 we read page 1 of four Naukri searches at 0 years of experience, for web developer, frontend developer, backend developer and full stack developer jobs. Of the 80 cards, we kept 65, dropping 14 repeats of the same company and title and one senior title, and read each description by hand: 17 web developer titles, 19 frontend, 18 backend and 11 full stack.
| Named in the text | Web (17) | Front (19) | Back (18) | Full stack (11) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HTML | 12 | 18 | 2 | 8 |
| JavaScript | 12 | 11 | 4 | 7 |
| React | 3 | 7 | 0 | 8 |
| A backend language | 9 | 1 | 13 | 8 |
| Databases | 6 | 2 | 18 | 6 |
| APIs | 2 | 6 | 11 | 9 |
| Git | 2 | 4 | 6 | 4 |
| Both front end and back end | 8 | 1 | 2 | 8 |
Each column is one page of one search, 11 to 19 listings, so the numbers are small. Fifty-eight of the 65 had been posted three or more weeks before we read them, 26 share a line of eight or more words, word for word, with another company's listing, and 10 name no technology at all. A listing's requirement is not a hiring decision, and these counts are not a share of the job market.
Web developer vs full stack developer
A full stack developer listing for freshers usually names both halves of a web app; a web developer listing does about half the time, and then mostly with PHP. Of the 11 full stack titles we read on 2 November 2026, 8 named a frontend and a backend technology, 6 of them requiring both. Of the 17 web developer titles, 8 did, and the backend in 6 of those 8 was PHP. Web developer listings also named design more than any other role: UI/UX or a design tool in 6 of the 17. Shopify, SEO and WordPress appear among them, and Naukri's own role field files the 17 under five different roles, Back End Developer most often.
Full stack listings do not agree on one stack. The 8 that name both halves pair React, Angular, Vue or Next.js with Django, Node.js, C#, PHP, Java Spring Boot or .NET, most often as options in a list. What full stack listings returned for python full stack developer name, and the projects built from it, is in our guide Python full stack projects.
Front end vs back end in fresher listings
Frontend listings for freshers name the front end only, and backend listings name databases and APIs. Of the 19 frontend titles, 18 named frontend technologies only: HTML in 18, JavaScript in 11, React in 7. Seven of the 19 are one duties template, word for word, which opens "Use markup languages like HTML to create user-friendly web pages" and asks the developer to "Help back-end developers with coding and troubleshooting". What React listings for freshers ask for is in our guide React projects for your resume.
All 18 backend titles mention databases, 12 by name; 11 name APIs and 9 REST. Thirteen name a backend language, usually as one choice in a list such as "Python, Ruby, Java, Node.js, or others": Node.js in 8, Python or a Python framework in 7, Java in 6, PHP in 2. Python is a backend language in these listings: no frontend title names it. Two backend titles ask for some front end too, one for "Basic knowledge of front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) for integration purposes".
Which is better for a fresher: web development or full stack?
Fresher listings do not say one web role is better; they say what each role asks. In the 65 listings Naukri showed freshers on 2 November 2026, the frontend titles asked least beyond a fresher (1 of 19 asked for more than a fresher in its own text), then full stack (2 of 11), web developer (4 of 17) and backend (5 of 18). Most of those ask for previous experience in the role without naming years.
A fresher choosing between them can read the role table above as a list of what to learn for each title: HTML, CSS, JavaScript and a framework such as React for frontend; a backend language, a database and APIs for backend; both for full stack. Campus placement rounds test the same things whatever the role, aptitude, coding and CS theory, as our guide placement preparation for B.Tech and MCA students shows.
Who earns more, backend or full stack developer?
Fresher listings in India do not say who earns more. Of the 65 listings we read on 2 November 2026, Naukri's salary field showed a figure on one, a backend listing at 5-6 lakh a year, and "Not Disclosed" on 61; the 3 internships, all web developer titles, were marked "Unpaid", and none gave a stipend figure. One listing, a contract for a company abroad, gave a range in US dollars. A single figure cannot compare four roles, so this guide gives no salary for any of them.
What to show for each role
Most fresher listings for web roles do not ask for a project, and no frontend or full stack listing among the 65 did. Four required work to show, two web developer listings and two backend: "A portfolio of past Shopify builds or landing pages you can share", a portfolio of graphic design, "experience building backend projects, REST APIs, or SaaS applications", and "Proven experience as a Back-End Developer with a portfolio showcasing back-end development projects". One web developer internship lists "Candidates with basic projects, GitHub repositories, or academic projects will be preferred". The other 59 did not mention the candidate's projects, and none said what a project does for an application.

The program, its modules and its terms are on the Prokopi Elite page.
