Gen AI engineer vs AI engineer, from fresher job listings in India
What is the difference between a gen AI engineer and an AI engineer?
In Indian fresher listings, a gen AI engineer is an AI engineer who builds on large language models. Of the first 80 Naukri results for “gen AI engineer” on 5 November 2026, 4 carried that title and 40 said AI engineer. Some AI engineer listings ask for building models instead: 10 of 44 read in October.
How often fresher listings say "gen AI engineer"
Few fresher listings in India carry the title gen AI engineer. On 5 November 2026, at 0 years of experience, Naukri's gen AI engineer search reported 99 listings, its generative AI engineer search 301 and its AI engineer search 2,216. The three searches return many of the same listings: two of the gen AI engineer listings below are on the first page of the AI engineer search.
We read the first 80 of the gen AI engineer search's 99 results (Naukri sent its fifth page back to the first) and sorted them by title before reading any description. Forty said AI engineer in some wording, such as Junior AI Engineer or Artificial Intelligence Engineer, and 12 said AI developer or AI/ML developer. Seven named gen AI: four were gen AI engineer titles, two were data scientist titles and one was an outsourcing advert. Generative AI is the part of AI that produces new text, images or code, and the titles overlap the same way: the work is asked for under both.
These are the first results of one search on one day, so every number here is a count, not a share of the job market. Of the 80, 40 had been posted three or more weeks before we read them, and 10 were internships.
What gen AI engineer listings ask for
Gen AI engineer listings ask for building software on large language models (LLMs) that another company trained. Nxtwave's Associate Gen AI Curriculum Engineer, at ₹4–7 lakh a year, builds "agentic systems that generate and quality-check" learning content, and asks for "at least one LLM-integrated app or agent you can show us (GitHub or live demo, not a tutorial follow-along)", for "prompt design, basic RAG, vector databases, calling hosted LLM APIs", and for Python "plus some full-stack (MERN or similar)".
Jobaaj, a staffing firm hiring for an unnamed client at ₹4–8 lakh a year, titles its listing "Generative AI Engineer / Artificial Intelligence Engineer" and asks for both kinds of work: "Design and build Generative AI applications using LLMs" and "Build and train machine learning and deep learning models (NLP, computer vision)".
The other two describe a different job from their title. Crisil's "Associate Engineer-Gen AI" listing is headed "Management Trainee (Artificial Intelligence)", asks for a basic understanding of generative AI and lists LLMs as a preferred skill. Workiy's "GenAI Engineer" listing, open to 0–3 years of experience, seeks "an experienced GenAI Solution Advisor" on contract.
Our reading of 44 AI engineer listings on 19 October 2026 found five more titles naming gen AI, two of them the same listings as Crisil's and Jobaaj's. Across the seven distinct listings, all seven ask for work on LLMs, such as prompting, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) or agents; three also ask for building models, such as deep learning or fine-tuning; none asks for building models alone. Seven listings are too few for a percentage.
Employers do not agree on what the title means. Gramener's careers page for a Generative AI Engineer asks the candidate to "Train generative models on large-scale datasets" and to "Experiment with various neural network architectures such as GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks), VAEs (Variational Autoencoders)" (Gramener). The recruitment firm Taggd's guide says of the same title, "This is not a research role", and describes an engineer who "builds, deploys, and maintains applications powered by Large Language Models (LLMs)" (Taggd). Read the description, not only the title.
What AI engineer listings ask for
AI engineer listings ask for the same LLM work more often than not, and some ask for building models instead. In our reading of 44 fresher AI engineer listings on Naukri on 19 October 2026, 29 asked for building on LLMs and 24 for building models: 14 asked for both, 15 for LLM work without model building, and 10 for model building without LLM work.
| What the listing asks | Gen AI title (7) | AI engineer (44) |
|---|---|---|
| Work on LLMs | 7 | 29 |
| Building models | 3 | 24 |
| LLM work only | 4 | 15 |
| Building models only | 0 | 10 |
So the difference a fresher meets is in the description. An AI engineer listing may be a model-building job, as 10 of the 44 were; a gen AI engineer listing, in the seven we have read, never was. That reading, skill by skill, is in our AI engineer roadmap for freshers in India. The model-building side, where the ML engineer works, is in our guide AI engineer vs ML engineer.
Gen AI engineer vs AI engineer salary
No source we read shows that either title pays more. Of the gen AI engineer listings in the 80 results, two state pay: Nxtwave ₹4–7 lakh a year and Jobaaj ₹4–8 lakh. Seven AI engineer listings in the same results state pay, from ₹2–3 lakh to ₹5–10 lakh a year, so the two gen AI figures fall inside the AI engineer range.
AmbitionBox, which collects salaries reported by employees, gives a typical range of ₹9.2–10.2 lakh a year for Generative AI Engineer, from 635 salaries across 0 to 13 years of experience, most of them in IT services companies such as TCS and Infosys (AmbitionBox, Generative AI Engineer). For AI Engineer it gives ₹14.9–16.5 lakh a year, from 5.4k salaries across 1 to 6 years (AmbitionBox, AI Engineer). The experience bands differ, so the two figures do not compare. Pay for AI and ML engineers by experience is in our guide AI engineer vs ML engineer.
Which title should a fresher search for?
Search for both titles, and choose by the description. The gen AI engineer title is uncommon, and the AI engineer title covers the same work in far more listings: on 5 November 2026 Naukri reported 2,216 AI engineer listings at 0 years of experience against 99 for gen AI engineer.
The listings under both titles name much the same skills. Python is named in 6 of the 7 gen AI-titled listings and in 35 of the 44 AI engineer listings, RAG in 4 of the 7 and 14 of the 44, and agents in 4 of the 7 and 17 of the 44. Nxtwave asks for an app or agent you can show; what listings ask for in projects is counted in our guides RAG projects for your resume and what a full-stack AI engineer does.
Where Prokopi Vanguard fits
Prokopi Vanguard, Prokopi's 10-month AI engineering program for B.Tech and MCA students, covers the LLM work these listings ask for. Its program page lists modules called "LLM Fundamentals & Prompt Engineering", "Embeddings, Vector DBs & RAG" and "Agentic AI", described as "LLMs that plan, act and use tools", followed by "Productionising AI + Conceptual ML", and says learners "Build a production RAG engine and an autonomous AI agent — two deployed, resume-ready capstone projects." The program, its modules and its terms are on the Prokopi Vanguard page.
