AI engineer vs ML engineer: the difference, and where a fresher in India starts
Which is best, AI engineer or ML engineer?
An AI engineer builds products on pretrained models: prompts, retrieval (RAG), agents and the surrounding software. An ML engineer trains and runs models on a company's own data. Neither is better in general. In Indian job listings open to freshers, AI engineer is a common title, while the ML side's entry-level listings say data scientist more often than ML engineer.
What an AI engineer and an ML engineer each build
An AI engineer and an ML engineer both work with machine learning models, but they start from different places. An ML engineer starts from data: preparing a company's own data, training a model on it, measuring the model, putting it into production and retraining it when the data changes. Google's description of its Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification lists the work as "training, retraining, deploying, scheduling, tuning, monitoring, and improving traditional and generative AI (gen AI) models" (Google Cloud).
An AI engineer starts from a model someone else has already trained, usually a large language model reached through an API, and builds the software around it: the prompts, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), which grounds the model's answers in a company's own documents, agents that let the model call tools, and the testing, cost and speed of the result. Egor Howell, a practising machine learning engineer, writes in Towards Data Science that an AI engineer "is a software engineer who specialises in the use and integration of foundational GenAI models". He also warns that "job titles in this industry are vague, and you need to really read the job description to understand the job you will be doing" (Towards Data Science). Read the description, not only the title.
AI engineer vs ML engineer example: one feature, two jobs
One feature, given once to an ML engineer and once to an AI engineer, shows the difference. A college wants every email that students send to its general address routed to the right office: fees, admissions, examinations or placements. This is an illustration, not a project we ran.
| Step | The ML engineer | The AI engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Starts from | Last year's emails, each labelled with the office that answered it | A pretrained language model and the list of offices |
| Builds | A classifier trained on the labelled emails | A prompt that asks the model to choose one office, structured output, and the code that calls the model |
| Checks it with | Accuracy on emails held back from training | A test set of real emails with the right office, run again after every prompt change |
| Pays for | Training, and running the model on the college's own servers | A fee to the model's provider for every email, and the time each answer takes |
| Fixes a new kind of email by | Labelling examples and retraining | Changing the prompt or adding examples, then re-running the test set |
| Ships | A trained model the college owns | A system around a model another company trained |
Both versions route the same emails. For the ML engineer the hard part is the data and the model. For the AI engineer the hard part is getting dependable answers from a model they did not train, at a cost the college will pay. That difference in where the work starts is the difference between the two jobs.
Which one can a fresher in India start as?
In India, AI engineer is a common title in job listings open to freshers, and ML engineer is a rarer one. On 18 October 2026 we searched Naukri.com, logged out, for each title with the experience filter at 0 years. The search for AI engineer reported 2,071 listings, and 37 of the first 41 results carried an AI engineer title, four of them internships. Naukri filed 812 of the 2,071 under Software Development and 280 under Data Science & Machine Learning (Naukri, AI engineer, 0 years).
The search for machine learning engineer reported 1,629 listings, but only 9 of the first 40 results carried an ML engineer title, while 21 were data scientist, data analyst or data engineer roles. Naukri filed 323 of them under Data Science & Machine Learning and 317 under Software Development (Naukri, machine learning engineer, 0 years).
This Naukri reading is one day's search, read by hand. Its totals count every listing that matches the words, including some that are not AI or ML jobs, and its first pages follow Naukri's own order. What the reading shows is what a fresher sees: AI engineer jobs open to 0 years, filed more often as software development than as data science, and an ML side where entry-level listings say data scientist more often than ML engineer.
What the AI and ML engineer titles ask for on paper
On paper, neither the AI engineer title nor the ML engineer title is an entry-level one. The cloud companies write their certifications for these jobs for people already working. Google recommends "3+ years of industry experience including 1 or more years designing and managing solutions using Google Cloud" for its Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification (Google Cloud). AWS writes its Machine Learning Engineer – Associate certification for "Individuals with at least 1 year of experience using Amazon SageMaker and other ML engineering AWS services" (AWS, ML Engineer – Associate). AWS describes its Generative AI Developer – Professional certification, the nearest of these to the AI engineer's work, as "Perfect for developers with 2+ years of cloud experience" (AWS, Generative AI Developer).
Amazon's pages for students separate the two routes at one large employer. Amazon's science roles, the route into building models, say "We're searching for doctoral and master's students who can go beyond just coding" (Amazon, science roles). Amazon's software development roles for students and graduates list coding, programming languages, data structures, algorithms and object-oriented design (Amazon, students and grads). That is one employer's guidance, not a rule for every company in India.
AI engineer vs ML engineer salary in India
AI engineer and ML engineer salaries in India depend more on the employer than on the title. AmbitionBox, a site where employees in India report their own pay, shows these averages as ranges to a visitor who is not logged in. We read them on 18 October 2026 (AI engineer, ML engineer).
| Average pay, per year | AI engineer | ML engineer |
|---|---|---|
| All employers, 1–3 years of experience | ₹10.4–11.5 lakh | ₹9.2–10.2 lakh |
| TCS, 1–3 years | ₹6.5–7.5 lakh | ₹6.4–7.2 lakh |
| Accenture, 1–3 years | ₹6.9–10.2 lakh | ₹8–11.2 lakh |
| Google, 1–3 years | ₹31.7–39.7 lakh | ₹32.6–48.9 lakh |
| IT services and consulting, all experience | ₹12.2–13.5 lakh | ₹10.4–11.4 lakh |
| Software product companies, all experience | ₹23.9–26.8 lakh | ₹18.5–20.5 lakh |
At the same employer and the same experience, the two titles are paid much alike. Across all employers, AI engineers with 1–3 years average a little more. Software product companies pay about twice what IT services firms pay, for both titles. These figures are self-reported, AmbitionBox publishes no band under one year, and none of them is a fresher's offer.
AI engineer, ML engineer or data scientist?
A fresher in India who searches for ML engineer jobs finds more data scientist jobs than ML engineer jobs. In our Naukri search on 18 October 2026, 18 of the first 40 results for machine learning engineer at 0 years were titled data scientist, and 3 more data analyst or data engineer, against 9 with an ML engineer title. Amazon lists the data scientist among its science roles, beside the applied scientist and the research scientist, and describes the work as using "scientific methods and techniques to experiment, invent, and implement new systems", working "with large amounts of data" (Amazon, science roles). For a fresher drawn to the ML side, data scientist is the title that appeared most often at 0 years in that search, while AI engineer is the common entry title for building on models other companies trained.
Should I learn AI or ML first, and which is easier?
Learn the software base first, whichever job you want: Python, data structures, databases and building APIs. Both jobs rest on it. AWS names "backend software developer" among the roles its ML engineer certification is written for (AWS, ML Engineer – Associate), and system design is part of that base too: our guide LLD vs HLD, and which a fresher should learn first covers its two halves. After the base, the order depends on the job. For AI engineering, the next step is building on models through APIs, RAG, agents and testing, with machine learning concepts such as embeddings, overfitting and evaluation alongside. For ML engineering, it is statistics, linear algebra, and training and tuning models on data.
Whether AI engineering is easier depends on where the maths sits for you. Swiss Cyber Institute writes that "ML engineering generally demands deeper competence in machine learning concepts than AI engineering roles do" (Swiss Cyber Institute). Egor Howell writes that "AI engineering is slightly easier to get into, as learning to work with foundational models is a quicker learning curve than understanding all the mathematics behind machine learning" (Towards Data Science). IIT Kharagpur's online programmes take the other view for freshers: "ML Engineering often provides a clearer technical entry point because it builds strong fundamentals first" (IIT Kharagpur Online).
Can AI replace ML engineers?
The companies that certify ML engineers have added generative AI to the ML engineer's job rather than removed the job. Google's Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification says the ML engineer "designs and operationalizes AI solutions based on foundational models", and lists "traditional and generative AI (gen AI) models" as the models the ML engineer trains, deploys and improves (Google Cloud). The new version of AWS's Machine Learning Engineer – Associate exam, MLA-C02, in beta, expects experience with Amazon Bedrock, AWS's platform for building generative AI applications, and lists "LLMOps engineer" among its candidate roles (AWS, ML Engineer – Associate). Both pages describe the ML engineer's job as it is defined in 2026. Neither is a forecast. What they show is that ML engineering and AI engineering now overlap, and what a fresher learns for one is useful in the other.
Where Prokopi Vanguard fits
Prokopi Vanguard, Prokopi's 10-month AI engineering program for B.Tech and MCA students, trains for the AI engineer's side of this comparison. After Python, DSA, CS fundamentals and backend engineering with FastAPI and PostgreSQL, its four AI modules are "LLM Fundamentals & Prompt Engineering", "Embeddings, Vector DBs & RAG", "Agentic AI" and "Productionising AI + Conceptual ML". Students build two deployed capstone projects, a production RAG engine and an autonomous AI agent. Machine learning is taught for interviews, conceptually: supervised and unsupervised learning, overfitting and the bias-variance trade-off, transformers, and when to use RAG, fine-tuning or prompting. A student aiming at ML engineering adds statistics, linear algebra and model training on top. System design and placement preparation come after the AI modules. The modules and their topics are on the Prokopi Vanguard page.
Frequently asked questions
Which is best, AI engineer or ML engineer?
Neither AI engineering nor ML engineering is better in general. An AI engineer builds products on models other companies trained, and an ML engineer trains and runs models on a company's own data. In Indian job listings open to freshers, AI engineer is a common title, while a Naukri search in October 2026 found, in its first 40 results on the ML side, twice as many data scientist titles as ML engineer titles. Choose by the work you want to do.
Who has more salary, AI engineer or ML engineer?
In India, AI engineers and ML engineers at the same employer are paid much alike. On AmbitionBox in October 2026, TCS averaged ₹6.5–7.5 lakh a year for AI engineers and ₹6.4–7.2 lakh for ML engineers with 1–3 years of experience. Across all employers, AI engineers averaged a little more, and the kind of employer moved pay far more than the job title did.
Can AI replace ML engineers?
The companies that certify ML engineers have added generative AI to the ML engineer's job rather than removed the job. In 2026, Google's Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification covers "traditional and generative AI (gen AI) models", and AWS's new ML engineer exam adds Amazon Bedrock and lists "LLMOps engineer" among its candidate roles. That describes the job today. It is not a forecast.
Should I learn AI or ML first?
Learn the software base first: Python, data structures, databases and APIs, which AI engineers and ML engineers both need. Then, for AI engineering, learn to build on models through APIs, RAG and agents, with machine learning concepts such as embeddings and evaluation alongside. For ML engineering, learn statistics, linear algebra and model training. The maths is the larger step.
