AI engineer roadmap for freshers in India, checked against 44 job listings
How do I become an AI engineer?
To become an AI engineer as a fresher in India, learn Python and the software base first: APIs and databases. Then learn to build on large language models (prompting, RAG, agents) and the machine learning behind them. In 44 Naukri listings open to freshers in October 2026, 35 asked for Python and 2 for maths.
What fresher AI engineer jobs in India ask for
AI engineer jobs open to freshers in India ask for Python and software skills more often than anything else, and for maths rarely. On 19 October 2026 we read the first three pages of Naukri's search for AI engineer jobs at 0 years of experience (Naukri, AI engineer, 0 years), kept the 44 listings titled as AI engineering roles (39 jobs and 5 internships), and counted what each description and key-skills list asks for.
| Asked for | Listings, of 44 |
|---|---|
| Python | 35 |
| APIs or databases: REST, FastAPI, Flask, Django, SQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB | 30 |
| Building on large language models: LLMs, RAG, vector databases, agents, prompting, LangChain | 29 |
| A cloud: AWS, Azure or Google Cloud | 26 |
| Building models: deep learning, PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, fine-tuning | 24 |
| Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD or MLOps | 13 |
| Data structures | 4 |
| Maths as a skill: linear algebra, calculus, probability | 2 |
A skill is counted once per listing, whether the listing calls it required or good to have. Fourteen listings ask both for building on large language models and for building models, 15 for the first only and 10 for the second only. This is one reading of one job board's first pages, in Naukri's own order. It shows what fresher listings ask for, not what interviews test or how many jobs there are.
Maths first or software first? Where AI engineer roadmaps disagree
AI engineer roadmaps disagree on what to learn first. Scaler's 6-month plan opens with "Phase 1 – Foundations: Python, Math, ML Basics (Month 1)" and reaches "Phase 4 – Generative AI & Large Language Models" in month four (Scaler). OpenCV's roadmap lists "Python and core Mathematics for AI" first among what its six months build (OpenCV), and Turing College's example begins "Months 1–2: Learn Python and math foundations" (Turing College).
roadmap.sh starts somewhere else. It describes an AI engineer as someone who "uses pre-trained models and existing AI tools to improve user experiences", working "without building models from scratch", and its prerequisites are frontend, backend or full-stack development (roadmap.sh). Microsoft's Azure AI engineer certification, which Microsoft has since retired, expected candidates to "use Representational State Transfer (REST) APIs and SDKs to build" AI solutions (Microsoft).
The fresher listings side with neither order completely. Maths was asked as a skill in 2 of 44, so a roadmap that spends its first month on maths is not following the listings. Building models was asked in 24, so a roadmap that skips machine learning leaves out more than half of them.
Stage 1 of the AI engineer roadmap: Python and the software base
The first stage of the AI engineer roadmap is Python and the software around it, the skills the most fresher listings ask for: Python in 35 of the 44, and APIs or databases in 30. Learn Python properly, including functions, object-oriented programming, packages and virtual environments. Then learn Git, SQL with one database such as PostgreSQL, and how to build a small REST API. FastAPI, Flask and Django are the Python frameworks the listings name.
A project to finish the stage, as our suggestion: a FastAPI service with a PostgreSQL database and tests, pushed to GitHub. Every later stage plugs into a service like it, and designing its classes well is the low-level design our guide LLD vs HLD, and which a fresher should learn first covers.
Stage 2 of the AI engineer roadmap: build on large language models
The second stage of the AI engineer roadmap is building on large language models (LLMs) that another company trained. Of the 44 fresher listings, 29 ask for this: 27 name LLMs or generative AI, 16 vector databases or embeddings, 15 prompting, 15 a framework such as LangChain, LlamaIndex or Hugging Face, and 14 retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) by name.
Learn to call a model through its API, and to write prompts that return structured output such as JSON. Learn to turn documents into embeddings, store them in a vector database, and answer questions from them with RAG. Learn what a token, a context window and the cost of a call are, because each one limits what an LLM application can do.
A project to finish the stage, as our suggestion: a question-answering app over a set of documents, such as a college's notices, that shows the passage each answer came from.
Stage 3 of the AI engineer roadmap: agents and evaluation
The third stage of the AI engineer roadmap is agents: LLM applications that call tools, take several steps and decide what to do next. Agents appear in 17 of the 44 fresher listings, which name LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) among the tools, and evaluation appears in 10. Learn tool calling first, then one agent framework, and then how to test an LLM application: a fixed set of inputs with the answers you expect, run again after every change to a prompt or a model.
A project to finish the stage, as our suggestion: give the question-answering app from stage 2 a tool, such as a database query, and a test set that shows how often it answers correctly.
Stage 4 of the AI engineer roadmap: machine learning and deep learning
The fourth stage of the AI engineer roadmap is the machine learning underneath LLMs, and the listings do not treat it as optional. Building models was asked in 24 of the 44 fresher listings: deep learning or a framework such as PyTorch or TensorFlow in 22, fine-tuning or training models in 11, and classical machine learning such as scikit-learn in 10. Computer vision (11 listings) and natural language processing (12) are the specialisations they name most.
Learn supervised and unsupervised learning, how a model is trained and evaluated, overfitting, neural networks and transformers. Then train a small model in PyTorch and fine-tune a pretrained one. Our guide AI engineer vs ML engineer explains where this work becomes a different job.
Where this stage goes in the order is our advice: after stages 1 to 3 for a fresher aiming at jobs that build on LLMs, and alongside them for one aiming at jobs that train models.
Stage 5 of the AI engineer roadmap: deploy it
The fifth stage of the AI engineer roadmap is putting an application where other people can use it. A cloud platform (AWS, Azure or Google Cloud) is named in 26 of the 44 fresher listings, and Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD or MLOps in 13. Learn to package an app in a Docker container, deploy it to one cloud, keep secrets such as API keys out of the code, and log what the app does, so that a wrong answer can be traced.
A project to finish the stage, as our suggestion: deploy the app with its tool and test set from stage 3 at a public URL, and link it from your resume.
Do you need maths to become an AI engineer?
Maths is rarely listed as a skill in AI engineer jobs open to freshers, but deep learning rests on it. In our reading of 44 Naukri listings on 19 October 2026, two asked for maths as a skill, one of them for "linear algebra, calculus, and probability theory". Three more named mathematics only as a degree subject they accept. Scaler's, OpenCV's and Turing College's roadmaps all put maths at the start, and the five AI assistants we asked on 15 October 2026 all put it before generative AI.
The listings and the roadmaps can both be right. A fresher building on LLMs uses little maths day to day, while understanding why a model overfits, or what an embedding is, needs linear algebra and probability. Our advice is to learn the maths when stage 4 needs it, not as a first month on its own. A listing that does not name maths can still test it in an interview.
How long does the AI engineer roadmap take?
Nobody has measured how long the AI engineer roadmap takes, and the answers on offer differ. OpenCV's is a "6-Month AI Engineer Roadmap" (OpenCV). Scaler answers its own question, "Can I become an AI Engineer in 6 months?", with "Many beginners are able to crack AI-focused roles within half a year through disciplined daily learning" (Scaler). Turing College's example runs "within 12 months" (Turing College), and the five AI assistants we asked said 6 to 12 months. None of them gives evidence, and the job listings we read ask for skills, not for a length of study.
What decides the length is where a fresher starts. A fresher who already writes Python and has built an API is through most of stage 1. Prokopi Vanguard, Prokopi's AI engineering program, runs for 10 months.
The placement interview at the end of the AI engineer roadmap
An AI engineer roadmap for a fresher in India ends at a placement interview, and the interview can test what a listing leaves out. Data structures appeared in only 4 of the 44 Naukri listings, yet campus drives' coding rounds test them, as our guide placement preparation for B.Tech and MCA students shows from the companies' own notices. Keep solving data structures problems through all five stages, and be ready to explain how your projects are designed: which component does what, and why. Our advice for AI engineer interviews in particular: be ready to walk through one LLM project end to end, from what the model is given to how you checked its answers and what each call cost.
Where Prokopi Vanguard fits
Prokopi Vanguard, Prokopi's 10-month AI engineering program for B.Tech and MCA students, teaches AI engineering in a software-first order. Its modules run "Programming Foundations (Python + Problem Solving)", "CS Fundamentals (DBMS · OS · Computer Networks)", "Backend Engineering — FastAPI + PostgreSQL", "LLM Fundamentals & Prompt Engineering", "Embeddings, Vector DBs & RAG", "Agentic AI" and "Productionising AI + Conceptual ML", then "System Design — LLD & HLD" and "Placement Preparation, Mocks & PAT", with a DSA track in Python that "runs continuously". Machine learning is taught in "Productionising AI + Conceptual ML", which the page sums up as "Ship real AI products + ML for interviews"; a student aiming at the model-building listings adds deep learning practice on top. The modules and their topics are on the Prokopi Vanguard page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I become an AI engineer?
To become an AI engineer as a fresher, learn Python and the software base (APIs and databases), then build applications on large language models with prompting, RAG and agents, and learn the machine learning and deep learning beneath them. In 44 AI engineer listings open to freshers on Naukri in October 2026, 35 asked for Python, 29 for building on LLMs and 24 for building models.
Do AI engineers need maths?
AI engineers need maths less in day-to-day work than most roadmaps suggest, but deep learning rests on it. Of 44 AI engineer listings open to freshers on Naukri in October 2026, 2 asked for maths as a skill, while 22 asked for deep learning. A fresher can learn linear algebra and probability on reaching machine learning, rather than as a first month on their own.
Can I become an AI engineer in 6 months?
Six months is what OpenCV's and Scaler's AI engineer roadmaps offer, and Turing College's example takes 12; none of them measures it. How long the AI engineer roadmap takes depends on where a fresher starts: one who already writes Python and has built an API has done much of the first stage. The job listings ask for skills, not for a length of study.
Can I become an AI engineer without a CS degree?
Many AI engineer listings for freshers accept a graduate in any subject. In Naukri's education field for 44 AI engineer listings open to freshers in October 2026, 38 said "UG: Any Graduate" and 4 asked for a B.Tech or B.E. in computer science or a related branch. The field is filled in by each employer and is a rough guide: a description can still ask for a particular degree.
