DSA for placements, from 71 fresher software engineer listings in India

How important is DSA for placements?

DSA, data structures and algorithms, is what placement coding rounds test, even though few job listings name it. Of 71 fresher software engineer listings on Naukri on 4 November 2026, 7 named data structures and algorithms, all as a requirement; Amazon's hiring page says its online assessment includes a coding test.

What fresher software engineer listings say about DSA

Most fresher software engineer listings in India do not name data structures and algorithms, and the few that do ask for them as fundamentals. On 4 November 2026 we read the first 99 results of Naukri's software engineer search at 0 years of experience, which reported 2,915 listings, kept 71 after dropping repeats of the same company and title, senior titles and titles that do not say software engineer, and read each description by hand. Seven named data structures and algorithms, all as a requirement:

CompanyWhat the listing asks
Creative Hands HR (a recruiter)"Strong understanding of programming fundamentals (OOP, data structures, algorithms)."
Softdel Systems"Understanding of data structures, algorithms, pointers, memory management, and object-oriented programming."
Electrifex"Strong data structures, algorithms, problem-solving, and analytical skills."
Godigi Infotech"Have a deep understanding of data structures and algorithms for optimized coding."
FlexAI"Solid fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and writing efficient, scalable code"
Lightmetrics"Solid foundation in algorithms and data-structures"
App Gurus"Strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures and algorithms."

None of the 71 named a particular structure or algorithm, such as arrays, trees, graphs or dynamic programming, or time complexity, a coding platform such as LeetCode or HackerRank, or a coding test. What the listings named far more often was a language, a database and a habit: the phrase "problem-solving" appears in 39, Python in 27, a database or SQL in 25. The listings from Google, Qualcomm, Cisco, Capgemini and Barclays in the sample do not mention DSA; Google's asks for "Experience programming in C, C++, Java, or Python".

These are 71 listings from one search on one day, not the job market. Fifty-two had been posted three or more weeks before we read them, 10 share a list of duties word for word with other companies' listings, and Naukri marks 29 as aggregated from an external source. A listing's text is also not its test, which is the next question.

What the placement coding round tests

Placement coding rounds are timed coding tests, and the companies' documents say how long they are and which languages they accept, not which topics they cover. Amazon's interview page says "An important part of our hiring process for software development engineers (SDEs) is the completion of an online assessment, which includes a coding test" (Amazon, interview topics). Its page for students and graduates lists coding, programming languages, data structures, algorithms and object-oriented design as the skills that "will help you excel" (Amazon, students and grads).

In campus drives in India, TCS's National Qualifier Test gives 90 minutes to "Advanced Coding" (TCS NQT 2025), Accenture's Associate Software Engineer coding assessment gives 3 questions in 60 minutes (Accenture ASE), and Wipro's Elite test for the 2024 batch has 60 minutes of "Coding on C, C++, Java, Python programming languages" (Wipro Elite 2024). None of the three documents names a data structure or a topic. The rest of each drive, the aptitude, technical and communication rounds, is in our guide placement preparation for B.Tech and MCA students.

Is DSA enough for placements?

No employer page or listing we read treats DSA as enough on its own. Amazon's interview topics list eight more beside data structures and algorithms: programming language, coding, object-oriented design, databases, distributed computing, operating systems, internet topics, and general machine learning and artificial intelligence (Amazon, interview topics). In the 71 fresher listings, a database or SQL was named in 25, object-oriented programming in 9, computer networks in 6 and operating systems in 3.

Object-oriented design is on Amazon's student list beside coding and DSA; how it relates to system design for freshers is in our guide LLD vs HLD. What a listing asks beyond DSA also depends on the role: frontend, backend and full stack listings for freshers name different stacks, as our guide web development vs full stack counts them.

Which language for DSA in placements?

Use a language the company's notice lists; Python is the one fresher listings name most. Of the 71 software engineer listings, Python was named in 27, C++ in 18 and Java in 17, and Python in 6 of the 7 that named DSA, usually as one choice among several, such as "Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++".

The campus lists differ. Accenture's ASE coding assessment can be solved in Java, Dotnet, Python, C++ or C# for backend, among others (Accenture ASE), and Wipro's Elite test lists C, C++, Java and Python (Wipro Elite 2024). Cognizant's 2025 cybersecurity drive said candidates "will be evaluated on Java, ANSI SQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript skills" (Cognizant 2025), and the TCS document we read names no language. A student who practises DSA in Python can use it at Accenture and Wipro, and should read each notice before a drive.

What DSA topics to practise for placements

The campus documents we read name no DSA topics, so any topic list for placements comes from practice sites, not from the companies. Amazon is the exception. It suggests "reviewing common algorithms such as traversals, divide and conquer, breadth-first search vs. depth-first search and understand the trade-offs for each", says "Your interview will not be focused on rote memorization of algorithms", and expects candidates "to know the runtimes for common operations as well as how they use memory" for data structures (Amazon, interview topics).

A way to practise, ours, built from those sources: solve problems in timed sets that match the published rounds, such as 3 questions in an hour as Accenture sets them; for each data structure you use, say the runtime of its common operations and the memory it takes; and practise traversals, divide and conquer, and breadth-first and depth-first search until you can explain when each one fits.

Where Prokopi Elite fits

Prokopi Elite's curriculum, as its program page lists it, runs a module called "DSA (Python) — Interview Core (the spine)", described as "The spine — 250-350 problems, company-tagged" and run "continuous (all 6 months)", beside "CS Fundamentals (DBMS, SQL, OS, CN, OOP) — Interview Ready". The program, its modules and its terms are on the Prokopi Elite page.

Frequently asked questions

How important is DSA for placements?

DSA is what placement coding rounds test, even when the job listing does not name it. Of 71 fresher software engineer listings on Naukri on 4 November 2026, 7 named data structures and algorithms. Amazon's hiring page says its online assessment includes a coding test, and lists data structures and algorithms among its interview topics.

Is DSA enough for placements?

Not on the evidence of employers' own pages and listings. Amazon lists eight more interview topics beside data structures and algorithms, including object-oriented design, databases and operating systems. Of 71 fresher software engineer listings on Naukri on 4 November 2026, 39 used the phrase problem-solving and 25 named a database or SQL, against 7 that named DSA.

Which language is best for DSA for placements?

No source names one best language; the company's notice decides. Python was the language named most, in 27 of 71 fresher software engineer listings on Naukri on 4 November 2026, and in 6 of the 7 that named DSA. Accenture's ASE coding assessment and Wipro's Elite test list Python; Cognizant's 2025 cybersecurity drive evaluated Java.

What DSA topics are asked in placement coding rounds?

The campus documents of TCS, Accenture and Wipro give their coding rounds' minutes and languages but name no DSA topic. Amazon's interview page names traversals, divide and conquer, and breadth-first versus depth-first search, and asks candidates to know the runtimes and memory use of common data structures, not to memorise algorithms.
